To tell you a little bit about where and when I saw the plastic waste, it was last summer, around August 2024, on a popular stretch of Bai Sau Beach in Vung Tau, a coastal city about two hours from Ho Chi Minh City. As for why there was so much plastic waste, it was likely a mix of tourist negligence and

The beach was crowded with visitors, and I noticed heaps of plastic bottles, food wrappers, and straws littering the sand, especially near food stalls and picnic spots. Some of it looked like it had been carried in by waves, piling up along the shoreline, probably from nearby boats or coastal littering. When it comes to what I did after seeing it, I couldn’t just walk away—. My friends and I decided to do a quick cleanup, grabbing a few trash bags from a nearby vendor and picking up as much plastic as we could in about an hour. We collected bottles, bags, and even some tangled fishing nets, filling three bags before . It wasn’t much, but it felt like a small step.

Now, what were my thoughts about this? Honestly, it was

—it’s . I felt frustrated seeing such , knowing it harms marine life like turtles and fish that get caught in or eat the plastic. I kept thinking about how careless people can be, , and how it adds up to this mess. At the same time, I felt a spark of hope cleaning up with my friends—we were doing something, even if it was small, and it made me want to , like Dr. Nguyen’s river cleanups I’d heard about. It was about how much work there is to do, but also how collective action can make a dent. It left me determined to , like sticking to reusable bottles, and to spread the word.
