me was a creative writing workshop I took back in high school as it completely changed the way I looked at storytelling.

To set the scene, this happened when I was around sixteen, during the autumn term of my second year, so probably sometime in late 2019. The whole lesson was focused on crafting short fiction—we learned how to create characters and build scenes that could really

and make them care. Our teacher, Ms. Carter, this fun, imaginative activity where we had to describe a rusty old key in as much detail as possible, and then we swapped our stories with a partner, which really helped in the room.

Now, why did I enjoy it so much? Well, honestly, it felt like

writing. Ms. Carter making the class feel open and welcoming—you never felt judged, even when your ideas were totally out there. Her excitement about writing was contagious , and it made me want to dive in and try things I’d normally be too shy to attempt. What really stood out was how she encouraged us to think deeply about our characters’ motivations—like, why they were making certain choices, not just what they were doing. It helped me realize that good writing isn’t just about having a plot; it’s about understanding people. The best part was how collaborative the session felt—we were , reading each other’s work and sharing honest, supportive feedback. That sense of community and creativity really me, and from that day on, I started keeping a little notebook of story ideas outside of class. It’s something I still do, actually. That one lesson planted a seed that’s stuck with me ever since.
